An Introduction

My ex-wife, Arlene, and I have a very good relationship. Always wondered if we stayed together, would we have made it through the tough times and ended up in a good place.

Let me hand out this spoiler alert…

...the night before my wedding day, I thought, ‘How bad can this be?’

How bad indeed.

So, not a good relationship in our marriage, but we ended up in a good relationship in our divorce.

While I was married, and things didn’t look good, I knew quite a few people who were divorced, or getting divorced, who gave me advice.

They were mostly men, and warned me what to do when the police showed up to our house.

Was told, ‘make sure nothing is out of place, not even a broken pencil on the floor, or you’re going to jail’.

Just a note, the police never showed up to our house.

I was also told to take all my money, convert them to American Express Travel checks, and bury them in the back yard.

Jokes on them, I had no money.

To show it wasn’t all doom-and-gloom, I had this conversation one day.

Note: For context, this friend’s ex-wife lived in Bangor, Pennsylvania (which I did not know at the time).

Friend: I have to go see (insert his ex-wife’s name here) and I need to get to Bangor by four.

Me: (surprised) What?

Friend: I have to go down to Bangor by four.

Me: (perplexed) What happens if you don’t get to Bangor by four?

Friend: Well, then my father goes down to Bangor…

Me: (slight pause) Wow, you have a very generous divorce…

So, in that vain, what follows are stories that focus on Arlene, and my life, before, during, and after marriage.

These stories are here to show that there is a side to marriage, and divorce, that doesn’t include police reports and money laundering.

Let’s talk about the players in this book:

Arlene is played by Arlene (girlfriend/wife/ex-wife)

Al will be played by me (Al)

Everyone else (is played by everyone else)
